First of all in order to learn how to draw a dragon, it will be very simple you will need a sheet of paper, a pencil and your hand. Take your time and make pauses between each step, because this tutorial is quite detailed. To draw a realistic dragon, you will need patience and you will need to follow the instructions exactly, using the corresponding dragon drawing as a guide. We will now start by making a sketch of the different parts of our dragon's body. Let's get down to serious business, so don't forget to follow step by step drawing so you don't get lost.
DRAWS THE SILHOUETTE OF THE DRAGON
Step 1 : To create a dragon drawing simply with one's imagination, it is almost impossible, without steps and without having a solid base in drawing. So to do this, make a quick sketch of your ideas without accentuating the details. Creating a sketch will help you keep a coherent drawing without getting too out of hand. Just give the right posture and overall proportions like the drawing below without pressing your pencil too hard.
Step 2 : We will now rely on the sketch. On the chest you will have to draw a large oval shape. Dragons in general have a big chest and rib cage, they need a lot of power to feed the muscles and to be able to use their wings.
Step 3: Draw an angular curve to hold the dragon's scapula at the front of the chest.
Step 4 : Delimit the back of the dragon's body with a curved line.
Step 5 : In order for our dragon to be stable, it is imperative that we know where the ground level is. Draw a line towards it.
Step 6 : Paying attention to all the joints you have to draw the dragon's legs.
Step 7 : The legs of the dragon are very simplistic but a little boring. Let's draw the other pair of legs to make it more lively. It is necessary that you conceive that each part of the leg is like the hand of a clock, with the joint in the center. Make a drawing of the path the dragon's leg would go on.
Step 8 : Using these same lines, draw the other pair of legs of the dragon.
Step 9 : At the end of the neck of the dragon, draw a circle. This circle represents the entire width of the dragon's head, not just the brain.
Step 10 : Thanks to a curvilinear line draws the shape of the muzzle of the dragon.
Step 11 : By tracing the neck and the tail draws the rest of the dragon's spinal cone.
Step 12 : It's time to make a sketch for the dragon's wings. As with the birds, place the shoulder blades on the back of the dragon. To make the dragon's wings you need to imagine an arm. Then add the arm and the forearm.
Step 13 : To realize the tip of the dragon's wing you have to imagine a hand. You must then draw all the parts of the fingers, one by one. The second from the left must be longer than the rest.
Step 14 : The other wing is hidden because of our perspective. Next, refer to the drawing below and draw the other wing of the dragon.
DRAWS THE BODY OF THE DRAGON
Step 1 : So the dragon's silhouette set is ready now let's add some meat to this skeleton and start attacking the dragon's body. You have to draw a circle around the arm which will be the triceps and the biceps, it's an all-in-one.
Step 2 : Cover the shoulder of the dragon by drawing a muscle mass.
Step 3 : Drawing a line connects the shoulder to the dragon's arm. All this area will constitute the mass of the shoulder.
Step 4 : Combine and draw the muscles from the shoulder to the other leg of the dragon
Step 5 : Draw another large oval shape to strengthen the dragon's back thighs.
Step 6 : Connects the thigh to the hips of the dragon with a curved line.
Step 7 : Also adds the other back leg of the dragon by drawing another oval shape. This one will be at the front leg of our point of view.
Step 8 : The dragon's wrists and ankles have a particular bone shape, so it is important to make this area recognizable. Draw them using square and circular geometric shapes.
Step 9 : Draw the dragon's paws. Front or back, they should have about the same shape. Make slightly deformed rectangles.
Step 10 : Draw the rest of the dragon's legs by adding the "palms" and "feet" with rounded curves as shown below.
Step 11 : Draw the dragon more muscle mass to complete his legs. This will give him volume and charisma. For the back legs, use an inverted drop shape drawing. For the front legs, it would be two inverted U's.
Step 12 : Draw some additional details to the dragon, these details will make the difference in realism.
Step 13 : Carries out the final outline of the members. Just draw a few lines to link the dragon muscles.
DRAWS THE WINGS OF THE DRAGON
Step 1 : The dragon's wings need muscles too, they are the dragon arms after all. Start by tracing a huge muscle at the shoulder using an oval shape, just at the base.
Step 2 : This time, draw the biceps of the dragon using a closed and elongated curve.
Step 3 : Add muscle mass to the forearm of the dragon by drawing a fairly flattened oval shape.
Step 4 : Let's add some fantasy to the dragon's elbow and wrist. Draw basic geometric shapes, circle and square.
Step 5 : You can now draw the outline of the muscles in an elaborate and whimsical way.
Step 6 : Add the muscles of the other wing of the dragon. Draw them really slightly bigger, since they are in the foreground.
Step 7 : Don't forget to draw the finger of the dragon's wing, it allows the dragon to have some functionality linked to its arm. Draw a circle that you will connect to the wrist.
Step 8 : Draw the joints of the dragon's fingers on its wing. To do this, use small simple circles.
Step 9 : Trace the outline of the dragon's fingers. It is necessary to duplicate the lines and keep homogeneous lines, refer to the drawings below.
Step 10 : To complete the wings, insert the dragon's membrane. Connect the wing joints together. To make it easier to draw the dragon, imagine a spider's web and don't hesitate to rely on the diagrams below.
ADDS DETAIL TO THE DRAGON
Step 1 : It's time to give more details to the dragon's head. The best way to start the head is to create a simplified skull as a base. First, draw the brain.
Draw the orbit of the dragon's eye with a deformed circle.
Draws the upper jaw of the dragon without forgetting the nostril.
Draw the jaw joint of the dragon by making a small circle.
Draw a curved line for the dragon's cheekbone. Every detail is important.
This time, draw a curve to create the lower jaw of the dragon. It's simple, isn't it ?
Step 2 : The dragon's chest is slightly turned towards us, pulling the muscles that connect the arms and neck. Draw a line between the two to link the two proportions.
Step 3 : Draw two curves that will represent the neck muscles attached to the back of the dragon's skull.
Step 4 : To create a realistic dragon neck, draw a line down to the larynx at the back of the skull.
This will allow you to create this neat triangle with space for the dragon's throat, trachea and flame tube.
Step 5 : Draw a curved line to attach the dragon's powerful pectoral muscle to its wings.
Step 6 : Draw curved lines to complete the shape of the dragon's main body.
Step 7 : Since the dragon is related to dinosaurs, it will be elegant with dinosaur hips. Draw a curve at the base of the dragon's tail to make it stronger.
DRAWS THE TAIL OF THE DRAGON
Step 8 : Finally, draw two curved lines to finalize the dragon's tail. The first one superior to the other, they join to form a point.
DRAWS THE DRAGON'S PAWS
Step 1 : There are still a few details to draw before the body is fully formed: the dragon's toes and claws. First, draw the tip of the middle toe. Leave some space for the claw and flatten the pad when it is pressed on the ground.
Step 2 : Draw the dragon's claw using a curved and pointed line at its end.
Step 3 : Draw the other toe of the dragon, shorter this time. Add a claw to it as well.
Step 4 : Many animals have a "thumb" called a "dew claw" on their front legs. This allows them to hold the prey while it eats and, in the case of dragons, to catch the prey in flight. Draw this small claw pointing inward.
Step 5 : Draw the total length of the dragon's toes. Draw a tiny bump just between the toes, this will give an idea of the joints underneath.
Step 6 : Draw rounded lines to make the large pads under the dragon's paws.
Step 7 : Don't forget to draw the details with the fingers of the wing. Draw a curved claw for each wing.
DRAWS THE HEAD OF THE DRAGON
The base of the dragon's body is finished, you can finish this dragon drawing in your own way. However, I will show you a method, but feel free to create your own details. If you draw in the traditional way, you can put a new sheet of paper on the sketch to draw the final clean lines, or use a darker tool to make the sketch less visible.
Step 1 : Draw the eye and nose of the dragon. The smaller the eye, the bigger the dragon will appear.
Step 2 : Draw the wrinkles under the eye of the dragon.
Step 3 : It is difficult to make any kind of facial expression when you have hardened scales on your face, but the scales themselves can create a false expression. If you want to make your dragon look angry or mean, put larger scales along its forehead.
Step 4 : Draw the outline of the dragon's head with large scales. This will make it a little more fierce and impressive.
Step 5 : Draw smaller scales on the dragon's lips for an elastic effect.
Step 6 : What is a hornless dragon ? Make sure that the dragon's horns are attached to the upper part of the skull, not to the lower jaw by accident (horns on the lower jaw are more difficult to make functional).
Step 7 : Draw rows of smaller scale scales in the other areas, between the eye and the nose, cover the face. Always in the shape of curved lines.
Step 8 : Trace the outline of the dragon's paws by obscuring the previous strokes.
DRAWS THE SCALES OF THE DRAGON
Step 1 : It's time to balance it all out. Draw lines all over the dragon's body, adjusting their structure to the 3D shape of the image below. Imagine trying to cover the body with parallel rows of tape.
Step 2 : Cross the rows now, creating a tile pattern. Each line of a row should be placed between two lines of its side rows, as if you wanted to draw squares.
Step 3 : You can draw lines on some of the larger areas to make the dragon scales more detailed for later.
Step 4 : Connect the lines in rows with curves to create an outline of the scales.
Step 5 : Obscure the scales of the dragon in detail to get even more realism.
Step 6 : The wings don't need too many scales, so just sketch a few at the base. Also draw the fingers on the dragon's wings.
Step 7 : Draw and adjust the contours of the dragon's wing membrane.
Step 8 : Finish the drawing of the dragon by thickening the outer outline of the wings and adding a few details.
Step 9 : If you prefer to leave this artwork raw, without coloring, you can add simple and superficial shadows. This will add some volume to the dragon's body.
Congratulations, you have just drawn a beautiful dragon !
